The dystopian sci-fi, Westworld, is set in a futuristic, theme-park recreation of the lawless American frontier populated by human-like robots. High-paying guests to the park indulge in a fantasy in which they pretend to be gunslingers. When a programming error causes the robots to malfunction, the wealthy vacationers find themselves in a true Wild West. As the film looked to create a unique vantage for the park’s robotic dwellers, Westworld became a pioneer in modern special effects with its groundbreaking use of computer-generated imagery. Westworld remains a historic film, not only for its advancements in cinematic technologies, but for its early exploration of machine cognition.
