Joseph Cavalieri is an award-winning New York artist and educator who works in a material with a powerful spiritual history: painted stained glass. This technique, originally created by medieval stained-glass artists, uses enamel paints made of ground glass, metals, and pigment. Cavalieri updates this historic process by using pop art images.
During his MAD residency, he produced hand-painted and silk-screened glass works for an exhibition at SOFA Chicago, where he was the featured artist for the UrbanGlass booth. Six panels were produced during Cavalieri’s residency, all based on Simpsons characters and R. Crumb illustrations (with permission), all made of hand-painted, kiln-fired stained glass.
Cavalieri’s work can be seen in the permanent collections of several museums, and he is regularly invited to participate in artist residencies. He has also been commissioned to create permanent public artworks. For more information please visit his website: www.cavaglass.com.
