Dir. Daniel H. Byun 2000, 107 min With Jung-Jae Lee, Eun-ha Shim and Jae-hyeon Jo
The first, and only, Dogme 95 film from Asia, Daniel H. Byun’s Interview is a South Korean love story that explores the use storytelling to rewrite the tale of our own lives. When film director Eun-sok, playing himself in the film, begins to interview actress Young-Hee, also playing herself, he finds himself beginning to fall in love. However, as the interviews progress, the layers of fiction in Young-Hee’s tales begin to fall away. The result is a finely crafted and tender portrait of how fiction is used to keep our most tender feelings safe, and what happens when we begin to reveal the naked truths about ourselves to others.
