Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, the documentary film Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman profiles the life and career of Julius Shulman, a leading architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public.
After the screening, join designers Sascha Pohflepp and Chris Woebken for a discussion about how architectural photography documented the homes that acted as meeting places for America’s early think tanks. Pohflepp and Woebken will be joined by other special guests as they consider the significance of modernism and design in the 20th century and beyond.
