Dyeing for More Color: Workshops in Natural Dyes

Dating back to the Neolithic period, dyeing textiles with local, natural materials has been a staple of humans’ manipulation of fabric throughout the ages and around the globe. From Native American textile artists to Byzantine Empire manuscript and silk dyers; from founding figure of the Arts and Crafts movement William Morris to today’s fashion industry designers, many artists and makers have championed this non-toxic and environmentally conscious approach to the creation of brilliantly colored textiles.

This summer, join fiber artist and textile expert Isa Rodrigues, whose work is on view as part of the exhibition NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial, as she guides novices and experts alike through the multifaceted possibilities of dyeing fabrics using natural materials. From harvesting local NYC plants in order to create dyes to the use of indigo and unexpected, alternative techniques, Rodrigues opens up the vibrant possibilities of dyeing fabric and garments.
