For the exhibition Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound, MAD commissioned two new sound and video recordings to be made at Harry Bertoia’s Sonambient Barn from New York­–based musicians Lizzi Bougatsos and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. In July, Bougastos and Lowe will also create site-responsive compositions with the installation of Sonambient sculptures on view in the gallery and perform the pieces to a live audience. Bougatsos’ project, Gang Gang Dance, has been described as ‘percussive-minded,’ with influences ranging from Brian Eno to world music. Under the alias Lichens, Lowe creates live, spontaneous, and otherworldly compositions. The artists share an emphasis on ambient sound and a dedication to improvisation, making them a natural fit for animating the Sonambient sounding sculptures.
