Program Description

Join Xenobia Bailey as she guides participants through the creation of soft sculpture furniture prototypes. These sculptures will be miniature, as if designed for a dollhouse, and inspired by 1960s and 1970s African-American homemaker aesthetics. These “funktional” aesthetics inform Bailey’s own practice, and visitors will have the opportunity to work in the artist’s gallery-situated studio within the exhibition Studio Views: Craft in the Expanded Field.

Soft sculptures, made out of soft materials such as fabric and yarn, offer numerous opportunities for artists in terms of manipulating materials and exploring forms. As participants work, Bailey will play some of the music that inspires her; she may even read a passage or two from an author who inspires her as well! This workshop is great for arts enthusiasts of all backgrounds who enjoy working with their hands and engaging in lively conversation.
