In Memoriam

Fri, Oct 2 / 7 pm

Made entirely from footage derived from the video game series Grand Theft Auto, Phil Solomon’s trilogy, In Memoriam, employs the genre of machinima to construct haunting and poignant expressions of the human experience. A portmanteau of the words “machine” and “cinema,” machinima is the process of making real-time animated films by utilizing the 3-D graphics technology of computer games.  Dating back to 1980s software crackers, machinima turned into complex tales created within three-dimensional worlds as multiplayer video games grew in complexity throughout the 1990s and 2000s.  Eventually finding recognition by Roger Ebert, and utilization by filmmakers, including Stephen Spielberg, machinima evolved into an established genre of cinema.  In the hands of Solomon, machinima is pushed further–becoming a form in which to poetically reflect upon the society that spawned it.
