Fashion on Film: RODARTE presents Black Swan

Tue, Dec 19, 2023

Dir. Darren Aronofsky
108 min.
DCP

Kate and Laura Mulleavy of RODARTE present 2010’s psychological thriller Black Swan and will join us virtually from Los Angeles for a Q&A after the film. The film features Natalie Portman in her Oscar-winning role as Nina, a ballerina with the New York City Ballet in the dual lead role of “Swan Lake” who slowly and spectacularly loses her tenuous grip on reality.

Fashion on Film explores the intersection of fashion and cinema.  Guest curated by filmmaker Jeannie Sui Wonders, the series invites fashion designers to select films that have influenced their work and join us for a discussion on the interchange between cinema and the designer’s creative vision.

RODARTE was founded in Los Angeles, California in 2005 by Kate and Laura Mulleavy. RODARTE is distinguished by the romantic, conceptual way the Mulleavys approach inspiration, storytelling, and how they see the world though landscape, art, film, poetry, culture and music.  At the center of their unique approach to fashion is their pursuit of innovation through storytelling, which expands into multiple artistic endeavors, costume design, writing, and direction. In 2017, they released Woodshock at the 74th annual Venice film festival. The film was written and directed by the Mulleavys, starring Kirsten Dunst and distributed by A24. In 2008, the pair launched RADARTE, a t-shirt and casual wear collection with a play on the brand name and the word “rad” and paying homage to their California upbringing. International icons have worn RODARTE and RADARTE globally. Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s design for RODARTE and costume work have been featured in solo exhibitions at the most prestigious museums, culminating in a retrospective at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC (2018). RODARTE and RADARTE are stocked globally by the world’s premiere retailers.
