On the first Sunday of the month, join a professional artist to explore the galleries followed by a hands on workshop inspired by the objects in the exhibition. This program is suitable for ages 6 and up. At MAD, our goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn through their hands while having a good time together in our galleries and studio.
This month's Studio Sunday will be centered around our special exhibition, Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art.
Doris Duke’s Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art showcases a selection of objects of Islamic art from the Honolulu home of the philanthropist and art collector Doris Duke (1912-1993). This exhibition weaves a variety of objects from Doris Duke's collection with artworks created by the six contemporary artists who have particpated in the residency program now offered at Shangri La. Drawing inspiration from Duke's rich collection, these artists have contributed works that respond to the hybird of Islamic tradition and 20th century modernism found at Shangri La. Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape and Islamic Art offers a unique opportunity to explore the travel and research that led to the creation of Shangri La, the process of its design, the atmostphere of the property and its creative fusion of art, architecture, and landscape.
Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
