Deputy Director for Institutional Advancement

(Full-Time/Permanent)

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) seeks a Deputy Director for Institutional Advancement to lead and grow a comprehensive and modern fundraising program and cultivate revenue streams to support MAD’s unique exhibitions and programs and overall operations. MAD currently raises approximately $6 million in gifts annually toward an operating budget of $10 million. In addition, this position will be responsible for endowment and capital fundraising initiatives. This position reports to MAD’s Director

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) champions contemporary makers across creative fields and presents the work of artists, designers, and artisans who apply the highest level of ingenuity and skill. Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement and supervise all aspects of the fundraising efforts of MAD, which include annual giving and membership, corporate and foundation relations, program and exhibit sponsorships, major gifts, planned giving and grants, and endowment and capital giving.
  • Ensure that a pipeline is in place for future success at all levels of the gift pyramid for individuals, as well as corporate and foundation partners.
  • Oversee a team of professionals responsible for maintaining and growing the museum's base of individual and institutional support including events.
  •  Build a sustainable philanthropic culture that is seamlessly integrated into MAD’s exhibition, programmatic and marketing initiatives to further the museum’s overarching mission.
  • Help recruit, train and support Board Trustees and engage the Board in fundraising activities.
  • Work with the Director and Board of Trustees to facilitate short and long-term strategic plans.
  • Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of the fundraising program.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • A broad background in development with at least ten years in senior leadership posts, including work in all core functional areas of fundraising, as well as broad-based knowledge of strategic planning, donor acquisition, research, engagement, stewardship, reporting and overall management. Excellent sales and customer service skills.
  • A strong affinity for New York City and its cultural entities, knowledge of and passionate connection to the city’s art or design scene and deep fundraising experience within the metropolitan-area philanthropic community.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • A proven track record of success in non-profit and/or museum fundraising.
  • The ability to solicit six- and seven-figure gifts
  • Superior written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.

Education and Experience:

  • 10+ years of fundraising experience in a sophisticated enterprise, preferably within an arts-related institution or organization of similar complexity, including a strong and documented record of solicitation and stewardship.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, a Master’s degree or other degree in a relevant discipline is a plus, but experience is the most important qualification.
  • Non-profit experience is a major plus, particularly at a smaller non-profit where multi-tasking and deadline orientation are critical skills.

Compensation, benefits and perks – MAD offers a competitive salary in the range of $175,000 - $200,000, depending on experience, and excellent benefits and perks, including:
