Roger Brown: Theater of the Mind

In celebration of Roger Brown: Virtual Still Lifes, MAD brings leading experts in Roger Brown scholarship together with contemporary artists for a multidisciplinary exploration of Brown’s work and ongoing influence. The symposium marks the publication of the exhibition's catalog, a limited edition published in collaboration with the School of the Art Institute Chicago and edited by exhibition curator Shannon R. Stratton, which will be available for purchase. 

3:00 pm: Welcome 

3:15 pm: Tour of the exhibition led by artists Anthony Iacono and Hein Koh. 

4:00 pm: Panel discussion with artists Julie Curtiss and Lior Modan moderated by Shannon Stratton.

5:30 pm Panel discussion with book contributors Lisa Wainwright, professor in the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism at the Art Institute of Chicago, Lisa Stone, curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection, and Shannon Stratton.

Participants

Julie Curtiss's debut solo exhibition at Anton Kern Gallery opened earlier this year, and coincided with the release of her new artist book, The Dinner Party, published by Spheres Publications. Previous solo exhibitions include 106 Green (NY) and Various Small Fires (LA). Curtiss lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Paris, Curtiss received her BA and MFA at the Ecole Nationale Superieur des Beaux-Arts, Paris.

Anthony Iacono is a former MAD Artist Fellow. Aqueer collage artist based in New York, Iacono has received solo exhibitions at P.P.O.W. Gallery, The Approach, and Marinaro Gallery. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2013, was an artist in residence at LMCC Workspace, and was the recipient of the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship Award in 2017. Iacono will be a resident artist at the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program in 2020.

Hein Koh lives and works in New York City where her public art installation, Bracing the Cold, is currently on display at Rockefeller Center. In addition to her public art projects, Koh has exhibited her sculpture in major galleries throughout the United States. She is also the recipient of a Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Grant and was an alumna of the Artists in the Marketplace residency at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. 

Lior Modan’s work has been exhibited at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel, Marinaro Gallery, New York, Peana Projects, Mexico, and Haifa Museum, Israel, among others.  Modan has been an Artist-in-Residence at the LMCC Workspace Residency, and Seven Below Arts initiative. Modan received the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Award, the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem Excellence Prize, the Feed Biennial award (2013), and the VSC Joan Mitchell Foundation fellowship.

Shannon Stratton is the former William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design and the Curator of Roger Brown: Virtual Still Lifes

Lisa Stone is curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, both at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Lisa Wainwright is a professor in the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she has also served at the Dean of Faculty and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
