Techno-Love Series

With Cynthia Alberto

Thu, Aug 2, 2018

In conjunction with Summer Studio Residency: Cynthia Alberto and Weaving Hand, Artist Studios Program alum Cynthia Alberto presents Techno-Love Series, an interactive audiovisual exhibit that activates thirty of her woven, wearable “cocoons.” The program begins with a twenty-minute performance featuring thirty dancers, emphasizing the inclusive, communal nature of Alberto’s work. Inspired by the euphoria induced by connecting through music, the shamanic, techno-fueled dance routine is a ritual of healing and emotional release.

Alberto builds her cocoons through traditional weaving methods, using ropes repurposed from the 2016 MoMA PS1 exhibit Weaving the Courtyard. Modeled on sensory pressure vests—weighted vests designed to have a calming effect on individuals who are overly stimulated—the cocoons give the wearer a sense of both protection and liberation. Cocooned from the surrounding environment, users are able to let go and move freely, without fear of judgment. The result is a wearable piece of art that, far from being an untouchable object, evokes a sense of playfulness, reflection, peace, and escape.

After the performance, visitors are invited to interact with the cocoons and engage in their own healing and release.

About the Artists

An artist, designer, and founder of the Brooklyn-based healing arts studio Weaving Hand, Cynthia Alberto seeks to bridge traditional and contemporary weaving techniques, drawing inspiration from ancient communities of Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Her artwork, performances, and public weaving projects honor traditional and artisanal techniques while also incorporating unconventional materials and a zero-waste philosophy. Throughout her artwork and teaching, Alberto continuously explores the many intersections between weaving and healing, as well as craft and sustainability.

Zakhele Zamisa is a New York–based music producer with a knack for hip-hop, electronic music, and their respective subgenres. He is curating the soundtrack that will serve as the backdrop to Cynthia Alberto’s interactive audiovisual exhibit Techno-Love Series.
