Studio visit with Françoise Grossen

Wed, Jun 1 / 6 pm

Please join Windgate Research curator Elissa Auther as we explore the studio of sculptor Françoise Grossen. Françoise will curate MAD’s first POV exhibition that draws from the Museum’s complete permanent collection. In the 1960s Grossen rejected the loom for an intuitive approach to creating large-scale, hanging forms in rope constructed of knots, loops, braids, and twists. Her inspiration for this groundbreaking work includes examples of utilitarian structures made of fiber, marine ropes for docking and anchoring, as well as natural forms such as the exoskeletons of insects. Grossen translates these sources into abstract forms through a cumulative, repetitive approach that she describes as “rope upon rope, braid after braid.” Through this methodical process her work takes shape, shifts, and mutates.

Space is limited, and open to two individuals per invitation.  To RSVP, email sasha.silcox@madmuseum.org by Friday, May 20.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
