Program Description

Join Derrick Adams for a conversation with journalist Alvin Hall exploring the artworks and themes of the new exhibition Derrick Adams: Sanctuary, moderated by curator Dexter Wimberly.

Derrick Adams: Sanctuary consists of 50 works of mixed-media collage, assemblage on wood panels, and sculpture presented in an installation designed by the artist that reimagine safe destinations for the black American traveler during the mid-twentieth century. The body of work was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, an annual guidebook for black American road-trippers published by New York postal worker Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1967, during the Jim Crow era in America.

About the Panelists

Derrick Adams is a New York–based, multidisciplinary artist working in performance, video, sound, textile- and paper-based collage, and multimedia sculpture. His practice is rooted in deconstructivist philosophies such as the fragmentation and manipulation of structure and surface, and the marriage of complex and improbable forms. Through these techniques, Adams examines the force of popular culture and the media on the perception and construction of self-image.

Dexter Wimberly is Executive Director of Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, NJ. Wimberly has curated exhibitions and developed programs with galleries and institutions around the world including The Third Line (Dubai); Koki Arts (Tokyo); Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, NC; and the Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA. Prior to developing his curatorial practice, Wimberly was the founder and CEO of the pioneering Marketing and Public Relations agency, August Bishop; Director of Communications for The Museum for African Art, NY, and most recently, Director of Strategic Planning at Independent Curators International, NY.

Alvin Hall is an award-winning television and radio broadcaster, best-selling author, and renowned financial educator. His work in radio includes The Green Book (BBC Radio 4), “Alvin Hall Goes Back to School” (The Takeaway, PRI with WNYC), and Who Sold the Soul? (BBC Radio 4). The former host of such BBC series as Your Money or Your Life and Alvin’s Guide to Good Business, he has authored a number of best sellers, including You and Your Money: It’s More than Just the Numbers, as well as the children’s book Show Me the Money. Hall is currently completing a memoir about his childhood in the Florida Panhandle and developing several television series.
