Docent: From the Latin, docere, “to teach.”
The Docent Corps is an important extension of the Museum’s educational outreach. Docents are volunteers who assist museum visitors in developing an understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and design within the context of current exhibitions. Docents conduct learning experiences that impart information about the artists, their materials and techniques, and the art-making process to museum visitors. They are the “voices” of the museum—educators and representatives for relating exhibitions to the public. Docents encourage others to actively participate in the learning process of encountering and enjoying MAD's exhibitions and collection.
Welcoming and guiding museum visitors through the exhibitions are a gratifying way to make a contribution to the community. The Docent Corps at MAD seeks volunteers to lead tours on Thursday evenings, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Applicants must have a personal enjoyment of contemporary arts, well-practiced presentation skills, flexible schedules, computer fluency and be team players.
We are currently accepting applications for our next New Docent class in the spring of 2013.
