Technology and Innovation in Fine Fragrance

Wed, Feb 13, 2013

Like other cosmetics, there has been a steady stream of innovative technologies in fragrance over the last two centuries: from the dawn of synthetic compounds in the early 19th century, to micro-encapsulation techniques of the early 21st century, novel chemistry and processing techniques have been key enablers in expanding the perfumer's creative palette of materials. Tracing some of the milestones in fragrance innovation, Chandler Burr—curator of “The Art of Scent 1889–2012,”— will join renowned perfumer Jean-Michel Duriez - house perfumer for Rochas -- for an evening-long, participatory lecture.  They will explore the ingredients which have shaped perfumery over the last two centuries and which have subsequently changed the scent of successive generations of wearers and society as a whole.  The audience will be presented with sniff-samples of raw materials, in addition to complex fragrances from Lacoste and Rochas in order to chart the journey so far.
