Current
Architectural Model on View at 40 West 53rd Street
In the Fall of 2008, the Museum of Arts & Design will open its new and much expanded premises at 2 Columbus Circle.
Currently on view at 40 West 53rd Street is an exhibition on the new building, and an architectural model, made possible by Oldcastle Glass, that shows the thoughtful and imaginative transformation of the building by Brad Cloepfil and Allied Works Architecture. This exhibition is free to the public.
Central to the design, in which light plays a starring role, is the selection of all the glass for the new building, which is being specially developed and generously donated by Oldcastle Glass. The glass will set into an exterior clad in glazed terracotta panels created by Christine Jetten, a Dutch ceramic artist. With this distinctive luminous finish, the building will be at once quiet and alive, neutral and filled with color, changing with time of day and point of view.
At 2 Columbus Circle, the Museum will have more that three times the space of its current location and will double its exhibition galleries. Two highlights will be the Art Jewelry Center and an entire floor devoted to the permanent collection. The
Center for Arts and Design will have an art-making classroom, three professional artists' studios for master classes and artists-in-residence, and a seminar room for an extensive program of lectures, seminars, and workshops. A 155-seat theater will be used to present cultural and scholarly events, many in collaboration with performance artists, architecture, and design organizations. On the 9th floor, a restaurant and lounge will afford dramatic views of the city and Central Park.
The Museum of Arts & Design will continue to offer exhibitions and programs at 40 West 53rd Street until May 2008. For more information, please call 212.956.3535.
The model on view at 40 West 53rd Street has been generously underwritten by Oldcastle Glass, Inc.
The Museum is pleased to be included in the Alliance for the Arts online exhibition City of Culture: New Architecture for the Arts "New York City's cultural institutions are building like never before. The much-anticipated design for the new home of the Museum of Arts & Design at 2 Columbus Circle was on exhibition at the Center for Architecture in downtown Manhattan. The exhibition traced the conceptual development of the design for MAD by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture and included a detailed preview of the new facilities, which will anchor the southwestern corner of Central Park. To contextualize the project within Allied Works Architecture’s incorporation of daylight into an exhibition space – a challenge for many cultural facilities – the exhibition presented the firm’s conceptual designs currently being developed for the Seattle Art Museum and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. The exhibition was accompanied by a series of public forums and discussions.
In addition to the architect’s models and drawings, the exhibition included samples of the terracotta and glass that will clad the building’s exterior.
Oldcastle Glass generously donated the model and glass for this exhibition, as well as the glass that will clad 2 Columbus Circle.
