Horizon Award 2002 Second Annual Museum of Arts & Design Honor Celebrates Innovative Students in Craft Media
May 31 at SOFA NY 2002 Exposition
NEW YORK - The Museum of Arts & Design and Hunter Douglas Window Fashions, as part of an ongoing commitment to the arts community, will confer the second annual Horizon Award on May 31. The unique prize is given to students working in diverse craft media who share the common goals of excellence, innovation and leadership.
Marvin Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer of Hunter Douglas, will present the awards at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 31, during SOFA NY, the International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art in the Tiffany Room of the Seventh Regiment Amory, Park Avenue at 67th Street, Manhattan. Awards will be given for first, second and third places - $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000, respectively. The award-winning student works will be exhibited at SOFA.
Five schools have been invited to submit five objects each, by either undergraduate and/or graduate students. Faculty may select the five students from one or a combination of the following categories: ceramics, metalsmithing, jewelry, glass, furniture, wood and/or textiles. Selected schools this year are the Art Institute of Chicago, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Parsons School of Design, Savannah College and School for American Crafts, RIT. The list of schools and organizations invited changes annually.
Marvin Hopkins of Hunter Douglas, says, "We are delighted to support these emerging artists. Their creative approaches and innovative applications of traditional processes in making their art parallel the Hunter Douglas philosophy of creating products that combine the latest technological advances with designs that are both functional and appealing. By encouraging the next generation of artists, we help to create a more aesthetically responsive consumer. By recognizing their innovation, we also support the sources from which we will continue to draw our own inspiration."
"We are proud to be partners with Hunter Douglas Window Fashions in supporting emerging young artists," says Holly Hotchner, Director of the Museum of Arts & Design. "We believe, along with Hunter Douglas, that gifted young artists deserve to be nurtured, supported and recognized if they are to realize their fullest potential. Since its founding in 1956, the Museum has been an advocate for new talent. This award helps us fulfill this important aspect of our mission."
The Horizon Award honors the achievements of contemporary young artists, and is a pledge affirming critical success for the future of the arts community. The honor is granted to students based on individual talent, innovation, and a demonstrated future commitment to working professionally with craft media.
The objects entered - which must be made by hand - may be either one-of-a-kind or prototypes for future projects. Deadline for entry is April 23. Selection panelists will be distinguished critics, artists, designers, museum professionals and other experts in the field.
