Horizon Award 2001: Museum of Arts & Design / Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Honor Recognizes Innovative Students in Craft Media
NEW YORK - Hunter Douglas Window Fashions and the Museum of Arts & Design, as part of an ongoing commitment to the arts community, have established the first annual Horizon Award. The unique prize, sponsored by Hunter Douglas, has been created to recognize and honor students in craft media for their skill, innovation and potential to become leaders in their field.
Five schools will be invited to submit five objects each, by either undergraduate and/or graduate students, dedicated to ceramics, metalsmithing, jewelry, glass, furniture, wood and/or textiles. Selected schools this year are California College of Arts and Crafts, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design and Tyler School of Art. The list of schools and organizations invited will change annually.
Marvin Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer of Hunter Douglas Window Fashions, says, "We are delighted to be supporting these emerging artists. Their creative approaches and innovative applications of traditional processes in making their art parallel the Hunter Douglas philosophy of creating products that combine the latest technological advances with designs that are both functional and appealing. By encouraging the next generation of artists, we help to create a more aesthetically responsive consumer. By recognizing their innovation, we also support the sources from which we will continue to draw our own inspiration."
"We are proud to be partners with Hunter Douglas Window Fashions in supporting emerging young artists," says Holly Hotchner, Director of the Museum of Arts & Design. "We believe, along with Hunter Douglas, that gifted young artists deserve to be nurtured, supported and recognized if they are to realize their fullest potential. Since its founding in 1956, the Museum has been an advocate for new talent. This award helps us fulfill this important aspect of our mission."
The Horizon Award honors the achievements of contemporary young artists, and is a pledge affirming critical success for the future of the arts community. The honor will be granted to students based on individual talent, innovation, and a demonstrated future commitment to working professionally with craft media.
The objects entered - which must be made by hand - may be either one-of-a-kind or prototypes for future projects. Deadline for entry is April 9, 2001. Selection panelists will be distinguished critics, artists, designers and experts in the field.
Awards will be given for first, second and third places - $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000, respectively. Marvin Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer of Hunter Douglas, will present the awards during the Sculptural Objects & Functional Art (SOFA) Exposition, on Friday, June 1, in the Tiffany Room of the Seventh Regiment Amory, Park Avenue at 67th Street, Manhattan. The award-winning student works also will be exhibited at the SOFA Exposition.
