Sign up now
for MAD’s trip to Seattle! Seattle is the perfect location to witness the creative process through which materials are crafted into works that enhance contemporary life through the visits we’ve scheduled to numerous artist studios and private collections. Our exciting itinerary includes time with glass artists, designers, jewelers, destination landmarks, and the private home visits of prominent collectors. Just a few brief highlights include: visits with artists and their studios, such as Dale Chihuly’s waterfront studio known as The Boathouse, Benjamin Moore, Ginny Ruffner, Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace, Jenny Pohlman and Sabrina Knowles, and Roy McMakin, among others; an evening at SPiRAL Studio, featuring jewelry and wearable art; touring collections in private homes, such as Jon and Mary Shirley, Jack and Becky Benaroya, Chap and Eve Alvord, and Barney Ebsworth; and exploring museums, organizations and architectural sites as well. The Museum’s Seattle trip includes the luxury of prearranged and invitation-only visits, but also the ease of traveling without having to worry about making your own hotel accommodations as our trip includes a three-night stay at the chic Hotel Ändra in Belltown within downtown Seattle.

Deadline to join this trip is April 1, 2008.

Plan Your Trip to New York City
MAD's Home at 2 Columbus Circle Opens September 2008

The Museum of Arts and Design new home at 2 Columbus Circle is on schedule to open to the public in September 2008. The exterior fritted glass and ceramic tile façade is installed up to the 8th floor of the building, with work beginning on the storefront level as well. The scaffolding will come down in Spring 2008—a huge milestone for the Museum—unveiling the exterior of the building to the New York community and beyond.

The Grand Feature Stair, which will be visible through the first floor glass exterior, is currently being installed. The Feature Stair will be suspended by 500 cables and will lead visitors to the Auditorium level directly below and first Gallery floor directly above the Grand Atrium.

The progress on the exhibition floors is remarkable- preparing way for New York's first Jewelry Gallery, an entire floor dedicated to the Museum's Permanent Collection of art, craft, and design, and two floors for our opening exhibition, Second Lives. We look forward to opening our doors, restaurant, Store, artist-in-residence studios, auditorium, and new exhibitions to you at 2 Columbus Circle in
September 2008!

RECENT TRIPS

Turkey
September 24-October 2, 2007

Touring the Istanbul Biennial, the contemporary art museums, such as Proje4L, the Istanbul Modern, and Santral, and galleries, like the Apel Contemporary Art Gallery, Galeri’Nev, and Gallery X-ist, all exemplified the enthusiasm with which Turkey is embracing the contemporary art world. Visits to designers throughout the city, such as the team at Autoban Showroom, the internationally recognized Gaia & Gino, and jeweler Zeynep Erol, highlighted the diverse expanse of talent and creative success in Turkey. Of course, one cannot travel to Turkey without seeing Ephesus, Hagia Sofia, the Mosques, and the Markets. The sites, food, and accommodations were beyond anything one expected and were made the more spectacular by the warm and genuine welcome that greeted our group.

Miami
December 5-9, 2007

MAD traveled south to Miami for the more than 20 fairs that opened for four days this past December. Our trip included personal tours of SCOPE, PULSE, and Design Miami. We were pleased by the success of Design Miami and its focus on our field was exciting. In addition to the fairs, the group went to receptions at the Deborah and Dennis Scholl, Rubell Family, Craig Robbins, CIFO/Fortunate Objects: Selections from the Ella Fontanals Cisneros, and Margulies collections; the Enoc Perez opening; the Miami Art Museum; the Bass Museum; The Wolfsonian-FIU; and the private home of Dr. Eiber. It was an amazing experience to see the Design and Contemporary art world convene in Miami.

Laos and Vietnam
(March 1-14, 2008)
Cambodia extension
(March 14-17, 2008)
MAD’s mini-grand tour of the enticing countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia is taking place now. Vietnam’s cities host a thriving contemporary art and traditional craft scene. While in Laos, the group is enjoying a private tour of American designer Carol Cassidy’s studio where over 50 enterprising locals, mostly women, create shimmering wraps, ikat scarves, and brocade wall hangings using centuries-old patterns with modern colors. The extension to Cambodia offers the chance to discover the ruins of the ancient Khmer
Empire at Angkor, considered one of the wonders of the world and a visit to Less Artisans D’Angkor, a workshop where young Cambodians learn the crafts of wood and stone
carving, lacquer ware and silk weaving.
