Handling objects cater for a range of learning styles and enable the development of ‘multiple intelligences’ through multi-sensory approaches to museum learning. Through direct handling under supervision of clay, metal, wood, fiber, glass and objects made from new materials being used by artists today, this collection aims to introduce museum visitors to the three-dimensional materials, processes and techniques which are of focus to the Museum, and to guide visitors in an exploration of the significance and relevance of the objects that surround our everyday lives. It is hoped that this collection will give children, adults and visually impaired groups an opportunity to get ‘hands on’ with material culture, engage all of their senses, understand another layer of the artworks, and therefore maximize the educational benefits of visiting MAD.
This collection is continuing to grow. If you have 3-dimensional objects you would like to donate to MAD Educational Touch Collection, please contact us at 212.299.7759 or
aliza.boyer@madmuseum.org. Maximum size is 8 in.
