The 3rd Dimension is MAD’s formal after-school arts and design program for youth 13-16 fostering creativity and nurturing academic and social skills. The 3rd Dimension offers students from underserved public schools with little or no access to arts programming the opportunity to work intensively in several art forms so that they may develop as visual and critical thinkers in a safe, educational after school environment.
This unique educational program focuses on building visual literacy and fundamental skills of 3-dimensional art-making and the design process. Through age-appropriate instruction in multiple mediums including clay, wood, metal, fiber, glass and new materials being explored by artists today, youth explore the creative process and transformation of these materials from idea to finished product.
Taught by certified educators and artists, The 3rd Dimension program provides youth with satisfying and enriching opportunities to develop positive relationships with role models while encouraging appreciation of and facility with artistic media. Through participation in The 3rd Dimension, youth begin to develop a personal vocabulary—both verbal and non-verbal—as a way of knowing and communicating.
The 3rd Dimension 2-month sessions present interdisciplinary encounters with MAD’s current exhibitions and permanent collection, and reinforce school core curricula and New York State learning standards by exploring themes of community, identity, and culture through the visual arts.
Visits to MAD’s galleries to tour and discuss key works in our exhibitions help students strengthen the ability to reflect on their studio experience, gain practical insights into specific artworks, and eventually learn to make critical evaluations. By creating their own original artworks over a period of two months, students will learn how to handle materials, make informed decisions, learn design and art-making processes and techniques, and also gain valuable experience in critical thinking and teamwork. The program will culminate in an end-of-the-year exhibition of student work from all sessions at the Museum on our website.
Program begins January 2009. Please call or e-mail to enroll or for more information: 212.299.7759 or aliza.boyer@madmuseum.org.
