Professional Development Programs

Teacher Training Institute

Teacher training at the Museum of Arts & Design focuses on craft, art, and design, and the many different ways each can be incorporated into classroom curricula. This program is designed for classroom teachers who would like to discover creative ways of interpreting and presenting fundamental concepts to students in grades K-12, using craft and art as the bridge for comprehension.

Teachers are given the tools to explore fresh approaches, supplement the curriculum by providing students with new visual experiences, and fulfill NYS standards.

The Institute fulfills the needs of educators on all levels, exploring themes that reinforce cultural ties and traditions. Teachers will be equipped to help students explore the uses of art as a means of communication and crossing boundaries while helping them understand that art today is a mix of traditional practices and new inventions. We will focus on how materials, designs, and practices move from one context to another, and how practices are given new meanings as they move across cultural, economic and social borders.

Through the guidance of working artists, curators, and other professionals and specialists in the field, the Institute will provide participants with an enhanced understanding of the history, language, materials, processes, and importance of craft, art and design.

Teacher training programs focus on using the Museum's exhibitions as the primary resource of exploration. Participants will identify key concepts and investigate classroom applications in interactive tours of the exhibitions followed by hands-on activities, bridging exhibitions with classroom practice. Constructed lesson plans and assessment criteria are also discussed. A comprehensive standards-aligned resource packet is supplied to each participant, which includes active, inquiry-based learning experiences and workshops using MAD’s exhibitions and collections.

Teacher Orientations: After-school or weekend workshop during the opening weeks of each exhibition.

Summer Session: Three-day informal participatory seminar divided by several segments each day including daily workshops, discussions, catered lunch, and evaluation sessions.
