Join jeweler Ed Brickman for a hands-on class in silver forged jewelry. Mr. Brickman will teach participants how to craft their own silver earrings without the application of heat. Designed as an introduction to silver jewelry-making, Mr. Brickman will demonstrate how mastering a few simple techniques can open up many possibilities in form.
This class is being held as part of
Jewelry Study Day, an all-day event that will feature demonstrations in MAD’s Open Studios, a tour of the GlassWear exhibit with curator Ursula Ilse-Neuman and GlassWear artists, and a panel discussion with some of the most innovative and celebrated studio jewelers working today. We will be exploring the expanded range of materials and techniques used by contemporary jewelers use to convey their concepts, from found objects, to high-tech materials, to ethically-sourced metals and gemstones.
About Ed Brickman: Ed Brickman was born in 1925 in New York City, and began his jewelry-making career at sixteen. In 1952, Mr. Brickman spent some time working for a professional jeweler.
Mr. Brickman then started a business importing and distributes nuts, bolts and screws. Over the years he built this business into a global operation. Thoughout his career, he continued to produce pieces and reinvent the art of forged metal jewelry. Now that he is semi-retired, Mr. Brickman spends most of his time not only making new unique pieces but also sharing his knowledge by teaching the art of jewelry making.
His work can be seen in the permanent collection of the Newark Museum, Newark, NJ and at the Museum of Arts and Design. His work is also featured in new publications on jewelry making by Penland School of Crafts. During Mr. Brickman’s sixty-five year career, he has given workshops for the Florida Society of Goldsmiths and taught at The Longboat Key Art Center. Mr. Brickman is presently teaching for the highly respected Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.
